Social Studies Teacher Sites

www.thenhier.ca
THEN/HiER is the first pan-Canadian organization devoted to promoting—and improving—history teaching and learning by bringing together the multiple and varied constituencies involved in history education: academic historians; public historians in museums, archives and historic sites; practicing teachers; researchers based in faculties of education; and curriculum policy makers. Our goal is to create more research-informed practice (from kindergarten to graduate school) and more practice-informed research through dialogue among these various communities.

A very interesting site devoted to letters and images of Canadians at war. A part of the project is the attempt to put names to photos of unknown soldiers. These photos were acquired from antique stores, flea markets, etc. Click on Browse the Collection; Special Items and Collections; Unknown Canadians. A few of the photographs have been identified but most have not. Some give a year and location. Most have no information.

The Canadian Encyclopedia site via Historica is a great place for teachers and students. Check out the Dateline articles. The feature articles of The Canadian Encyclopedia have their origin in the weekly column Dateline Historica, written by Historica staff and guest columnists for CanWest newspapers across Canada. These articles are aimed at the general public and are written in a journalistic rather than encyclopedic style. The feature articles also serve as introductions to historical themes that can be researched through direct links to articles in The Canadian Encyclopedia.
